Dear Katherine,
Many thanks for your comments.
One of the points I wanted to make in this short post is that a pay-as-you-weigh pricing policy does not do justice to the multifactorial nature of obesity (yes, social determinants - among other factors - affect weight). Of course, as stated above, the introduction of such a scheme deserves to be rigorously investigated both on theoretical and practical grounds.

Social determinants of health unquestionably affect weight - but because of fat and calorie intake versus output - not because of some inherent difference in biology. Moreover, those who we should be concerned about related to social determinants are often not those flying. Paying for your weight is not inherently bad public health policy. It deserves far more in depth analysis than you provide.

Thanks Paula for raising awareness about this important issue. For readers who are interested, there are some further details in the WhyDev article linked below, including around the role of tobacco in driving NCDs, and work undertaken in Australia and India to get plain packaging on the agenda.

Hi Eugenia--I think it's significant that the players have clarified that countries won't be relying on Coke's physical distribution network, instead receiving advice on how to improve their own networks. Presumably countries will be less dependent because they will control the network themselves, won't need these services forever, and could continue to operate if Coke pulled out of the partnership.

On the other hand, there's a clear value to these services which countries might not be eager to lose, leaving plenty of room for corporate influence, at least in the near term--and for many advocates, the expansion of "Big Food" into developing countries in the next 10-20 years is a major public health issue.
